Antenatal checkup and care (also known as prenatal care) refers to the medical supervision and guidance provided to a woman from early pregnancy until delivery. Antenatal care should begin as soon as pregnancy is confirmed to ensure the health of both the mother and the developing baby.

Regular antenatal visits help monitor fetal growth, detect complications early, and prepare the mother physically and emotionally for childbirth.

Why Is Antenatal Checkup & Care Important?

Pregnancy is a sensitive and crucial phase of life. Without proper care, both mother and baby may face risks such as:

  • Miscarriage or preterm birth
  • Pregnancy-induced hypertension or diabetes
  • Anaemia and infections
  • Congenital anomalies or growth restriction in the fetus

Antenatal care helps identify risks early, ensures timely treatment, and supports a safe pregnancy, delivery, and postpartum recovery.

When Should Antenatal Care Start?

Antenatal care should start as soon as pregnancy is detected, ideally between 4 and 8 weeks of gestation, and no later than 12 weeks from the first day of the last menstrual period (LMP).

Women with medical conditions, previous pregnancy complications, or fertility treatment history should seek care even earlier for close monitoring

How Many Antenatal Visits Are Required?

For a healthy pregnancy, the usual schedule is:

  • Up to 28 weeks: Once every 3 weeks
  • 28–32 weeks: Every 2 weeks
  • 32–40 weeks: Every week

High-risk pregnancies may require more frequent visits as advised by the obstetrician.
