What to Expect Throughout Your Pregnancy

This detailed pregnancy guide follows the timeline from the moment you see a positive test to the day you hold your baby in your arms. Every stage of this journey brings new experiences, tests, scans, doubts and decisions—and it’s important to know what’s coming.

6–10 Weeks: Confirming Pregnancy and First Visit

As soon as your home pregnancy test turns positive, schedule your first prenatal appointment.

What to Expect:

  • Medical and obstetric history will be recorded.
  • A physical examination will be done, and your first ultrasound will be scheduled.
  • Initial blood tests will be conducted to assess overall health and identify any potential early issues.

Why this matters: Early prenatal care helps detect any underlying conditions, estimate the due date, and ensure a healthy start to your pregnancy.

10–12 Weeks: Screening for Chromosomal Abnormalities

This stage involves important screening tests to evaluate your baby’s development and rule out genetic conditions.

Common procedures:

  • NT/NB or Level 1 Ultrasound: Checks for nuchal translucency and nasal bone development. It’s an important ultrasound to screen for chromosomal anomalies in the baby.
  • Double marker blood test: Screens for Down syndrome and other chromosomal anomalies.
  • NIPT (Non-Invasive Prenatal Testing) or CVS (Chorionic Villus Sampling) may be advised if indicated.

16–18 Weeks: Anomaly and Genetic Marker Screening

This phase is crucial for a detailed assessment of your baby’s anatomy and development.

You may undergo:

  • Level 2 / Anomaly scan: will assess the baby’s organ development in detail.
  • Quadruple marker test: A follow-up blood test to detect neural tube defects and chromosomal issues.
  • Amniocentesis: may be advised if there’s a medical indication.

20–22 Weeks: Tetanus Shot and Repeat Scans

As you reach the halfway mark, your doctor will continue to monitor both the mother’s and the baby’s health.

Important steps:

  • The first tetanus shot will be administered.
  • An anomaly scan and quadruple marker test, if missed earlier, will be performed.

24–28 Weeks: Diabetes Screening and Growth Monitoring

This period is essential for evaluating Gestational diabetes in the mother and the Baby’s growth.

Tests and treatments:

  • Glucose Challenge Test (GCT) to detect Gestational Diabetes in the mother. It’s a simple blood test done 2 hours after drinking 75 grams of glucose in a glass of water.
  • Ultrasound-Growth Scan with Doppler will be done.
  • Flu and tetanus shots will be given.
  • Anti-D injection may be given if the mother is Rh-negative.
  • Biweekly visits begin from week 28.

32 Weeks: Growth and Risk Review

As delivery approaches, your healthcare provider will begin risk evaluation and plan for delivery.

At this stage:

  • A growth scan with Doppler will be done to monitor your baby’s well-being.
  • Risk factors like high blood pressure, gestational diabetes, or low amniotic fluid will be assessed.

34–39 Weeks: Final Preparations for Delivery

These are your last weeks of pregnancy and involve preparing both physically and mentally for childbirth.

What to expect:

  • Weekly prenatal visits with your doctor.
  • A final ultrasound is needed.
  • Birth plan discussion with your doctor.
  • “Pack your Bag” checklist will be provided to prepare for hospital admission.

40 Weeks: Delivery and Welcoming Your Baby

This is the moment you’ve been waiting for!

  • Labour may begin naturally, or your doctor may suggest induction.
  • Delivery may be vaginal or via C-section, based on your and your baby’s health.

Congratulations—your baby is here!
